Beeston Castle

The ruins of this 13th century castle stand on a 500 foot high cliff of red sandstone, offering perhaps the most stunning views from any castle in England.

The history of Beeston Castle stretches back over 4,000 years to when it was a Bronze Age hill fort.  Traces of the original fort can still be seen today.  The construction of the castle was started in 1226 by Ranulf, Earl of Chester.

Ranulf died in 1232, long before the construction of Beeston was complete.  His son John inherited Beeston, but he too died soon after and the castle pasted to the crown.

The defenses of Beeston were demolished in 1646 by Parliamentary order.
