Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle was built in only 7 years.  After his conquest of Wales in 1283, Edward I set out to hold down the country with a series of magnificent castles of which Conwy was one of the largest.   It had 70 foot high walls and eight drum towers each over 30 feet in diameter and was surrounded on three sides by water.

The interior of the castle was divided into two separate wards by a cross wall, so that either half could hold out if the other should fall.  The outer ward was the home of the garrison and the dungeons and the inner ward contained the king's living quarters.

The town of Conwy itself was fortified by the construction of a surrounding wall.  The town walls still survive in their entirety today, making Conwy one of the finest surviving fortified medieval towns in the world.
